| | content | ] | I've been meaning to do this for awhile and now I think I am actually bored enough to update and two people asked me to. So things have been going pretty well. The normal ups and downs but overall I can't complain. Hmm, alot has happened since last I wrote so I guess I'll go with the most recent stuff. Classes went well and were enjoyable when they didn't feel like it was four hours in a row. Now I need to figure out a committee and who I'm going to do research under, which is proving more difficult than I had thought. I found a professor thats doing research on curing diseases of birds which is what I want to do but I can't work with him because he's not part of the biotechnology faculty. I am disappointed but I think I will still talk to the guy anyway and find out more about that kind of research. So on with the search.
Now that there are no classes for a little while I've mostly been working. I'm liking it so far. It doesn't pay much and it can be boring at times but its good experience and the people are nice. Much better than my first job where people mostly just talked about me behind my back. Oh yeah, my supervisor is the dad of one of the people in Cepheid. It was kind of surprising and somewhat amusing to find out he knew what Cepheid was.
Not much else going on. Mostly been talking to and hanging out with friends in my free time who I am very grateful for. I miss Pat. Well, I think thats all for now. |

The first week of class has been...interesting. I ended up having to change two of them. One I didn't have the prerequisite so I dropped it and I am now taking micro again. Different class, different prof from the previous micro class I took so hopefully it will go better. One weird thing about it though is that my TA from my previous micro class is in my current micro class as a student. Maybe he's surveying it but it still weirded me out for a little while cause it not something I would have ever expected to see.
Taking two business classes and I am enjoying them except for one thing. They require class participation. For most people this isn't a bad thing and of course the class discussions are also what make the classes interesting. I can do it but it will be hard on me for awhile. Stupid being shy making things harder. In truth I haven't really had one of my business classes yet because the prof is sick and we've only been going to class for 20 minutes.
Last class is a directed studies. I'll be looking into new ways to extract oil from seeds and prevent bio-terrorism in the process. Not exactly what I saw myself doing but it does sound interesting.
Its nice to be challenged again even though I have been feeling a bit inadequate and under-prepared this week. |

This may be alittle after the fact but eh. I had a good Christmas and being at home was actually pleasant. I got to see most of my friends that were in town, there were actually alot more people there than I had expected. Yay, seeing people I've known since 4th grade. The snow while I was there made me happy. I like cold weather and since we live on a creek with a good number of trees, it looks beautiful covered in snow. Granted I'm pretty sure that if I lived in a place where it snowed in massive amounts, it would get old quickly. So, I'm going to enjoy what little snow I do see. I made my brother a snowman hood ornament and he never left the house to go see it. I was also reminded of one of the things I like about my parents house. With lots of trees come lots of birds so I can look at the window at anytime and there will most likely be birds to watch. For christmas I got more bird dishes. Nicer than the ones I had before so now all I need is bird china and bird silverware. I don't think they make bird pots and pans or appliances so sadly my kitchen will never be completely birds. Also got money which I am putting toward getting a new computer which will most likely be a laptop.
Went back to College Station for New years and had fun, if a little weird. But yeah overall things have been going alright and I haven't really been that bored since I've been back to College Station. Its been nice. I don't think I'm going to get my sleep schedule back to reasonable anytime soon. I also don't think Hormel Chili goes on everything and technicolor should not be abused. I'm going to stop watching TV now.

I finally got to talk to my adviser about classes so now I'm all registered. Yay! The adviser is new and still not quite sure at whats he's doing but is most helpful and I don't think his inexperience will screw me over. I probably won't blindly trust what my adviser says this time though.
I found an alternative to taking the evil microbiology class over again. I can take a not so evil micro class with a different professor. Unfortunately all the classes for the not so evil micro course are full for next semester so that would take me out of the running for vet school this time around. Now I didn't expect to get into vet school this time around but I did want to go through the whole application process to get experience especially with the interview portion. Not taking the class again next semester would automatically mean no interview but I can avoid the class that I hated with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns and be much less stressed. The evil micro class has lots of available space for next semester and I kindof would also like to take it again to show it that I can beat it. I don't know what to do but I think I will end up waiting and taking the easier class. Besides that means I can actually blow up the books from the evil micro class.
Went to Corpus Christi with the family this past week. It was fun. My extended family is full of cool people. I think I like going to the beach in winter better. Its less crowded and its not really that cold. The USS Lexington is also pretty fun to wander around on for hours. |

Haven't done an actual update in awhile so here goes.
I got into grad school. Yay! Its not vet school but it may help me get into vet school eventually and it gives me a better chance for a decent paying job if vet school doesn't work out its all good. Unfortunately my adviser is out of town until next week so I can't do anything about getting classes and stuff until then. I'm going to be glad to be back in school.
I'm going to have to retake the class I hated most to be eligible for vet school. It was a 5 hour class too. I'm hoping to take it next semester to get it over with. I hope it fits in my schedule. Hope I do better the second time around since I don't plan on giving up on getting into vet school anytime soon.
Thanksgiving was good. I got to see relatives that I haven't gotten to see in awhile so that was fun. I'll see even more relatives this weekend when my brother graduates. Silly overachiever graduating a semester early.
Went to go see Arnold Schwarzenegger receive the George Bush award for excellence in public service today. It was short but interesting. His acceptance speech emphasized service service service and he is good about adding humor in his speeches. It did remind me that I do tend to be happier when I am in some way helping others.
My phone broke. Dropped it and even has a nice dent to show for it. Actually the only thing it doesn't do is ring. It still vibrates so I know I'm getting a call atleast. People can still call and I can still answer, I just may be less likely to notice. Well I've kind of been wanting a new phone anyway.
There's probably more I could talk about but I can't think of it right now. There have been some downs and some confusion but overall I can't complain. |

You are a falcon! You represent loyalty and truth. You can be quite loving to those around you or just plain mean. You have a big heart and are very fierce when you have to be. Fun Fact: Because of land development, falcons have been known to live on top of skyscrapers!

| | happy | ] | Yay, progress. I got stuff done and had a lot of fun. So today I made myself do the hardest part of the grad school applications, atleast for me, go ask for recommendations. I actually only went to one prof but now that I've done one, the rest won't be so bad. I was actually extremely nervous about asking, to the point of I couldn't really sleep. In times like these I really wish I wasn't shy. But it all turned out well, he was happy to write the letters for me and he is even helping me try to find a job. He introduced me to a prof that I'm supposed to go talk to next week sometime, about maybe working in his lab. He says he's full on student workers but even if he doesn't need any more workers, he'll still show me the lab and he does interesting work with bats, so it'd still be worthwhile to go talk to him. So now I feel more on the road to getting things accomplished, so I'm feeling better.
About a week ago I got a mini rose bush as a graduation present from one of my relatives. It made me happy, I never expected to get something like that, but it started to look sad so today I went and got a bigger pot and put it outside in hopes that more room to grow and actual sunlight would help cause I think I was giving it the correct amount of water.
The rest of the day I had much fun hanging out with people. Even if my friends molest me occasionally. I kindof miss eating in Hullabaloo, not the food but the people. It was a good way to keep up with some people and waste quarters in the DDR machine. I went today because I was already on campus to see my prof and enjoyed being there again, too bad the DDR machine wasn't working. |

So, I made it back alright and I'm going to see what I can remember from the last week. This could get long.
Before we left Dusseldorf one of my friends host mom took us to Wal Mart because we were all curious what one in Germany was like. Well, this one was kindof small and rundown. There was a downpour while we were there and the place started to flood. We had to wade through a 4 in. puddle to get out. Then when we got out we found out the train we wanted to take wasn't working. There was a bus taking over the route but since we couldn't speak German we couldn't figure out where the stop was. We found another train that would work so we did manage to get home. All that made for an interesting day.
The next morning we all said good bye to our host families which was kindof sad. For some it wasn't. They had some problems with their families and were counting the days till we left. As for me, I liked my host mom but I'm not sure we ever got to the point where we completely understood each other. But anyway we headed to Nuremburg by bus. We stopped at Wurzburg along the way and took a city tour. Its a neat little town. Very proud of their large wine cellar. We got to Nuremburg in time to check into the hotel and eat supper there. We stayed in Nuremburg for a couple days were we went on a city tour, it wasn't a walking tour so that was a nice change of pace. What I remember most is all the WWII history thats there. We went to the nazi rally grounds and documentation center. They keep them as reminders but have no respect for them. All in all it was interesting to learn about WWII history from the country that started it and how much impact the war had on the country. On a lighter note we went to a midieval festival. It was kindof neat, but really small. The neatest thing about it was that in was at an actual castle, well it was in the moat anyway. I think we also tried to visit every bar that made its own beer. I've tried more beer than I ever thought I would while on this trip and all I can say is if German beer is supposed to be the best, I don't want to try anything else becuase it didn't taste very good.
After three nights in Nuremburg we headed to Munich. Yet again we did another city tour. Our guide looked like he could have used to stay out of the sun for awhile. I liked it because it was a big city that didn't feel like a big city. Most of our time in Munich was spent shopping and going to beer gardens. We had some pretty interesting conversations while in the beer gardens. Never thought I would here a conversation with a professor discussing the color of peoples underwear. But anyway while we stayed in Muich we did alot of traveling to near by towns. We went to Dachau (what used to be a concentration camp) and Neuschawnstein. Being at Dachau was a weird feeling, you could feel that something horrible had happened there even though it didn't look like it. One of our professors is Jewish and its interesting to get his perspective on things. The trip to Neuschawnstein was fun and I had been looking forward to it. We stopped by a famous baroque church before had and there were horses near by that we went to go pet and the baby kept trying to eat peoples bags. Neuschawnstein is very touristy but I still enjoyed it. I had never seen a room well hall way that was made to look like a cave before. My legs remembered the hike up the mountain for days afterwards. After the castle we went swimming in a near by lake. I didn't go swimming becuase I didn't have my swim suit but I had fun on the dock with my feet in the water taking pictures for people. The water was clear, I hadn't seen that for awhile.
For our last day we went to Heidleburg to look at the castle there. Even though the hike up the mountain wasn't as long, my body was still protesting from the last time, so I don't think I enjoyed the castle as much as I would have. Spent some time doing some last minute shopping and then we had our fair well dinner. It was a nice dinner and I laughed till I cryed. I'm really glad I with such a good group of people. After that we got on the bus to go to the airports. Got to the airport at 1am and our flight wasn't till 7am. I stayed up the entire time. We had to change flights because our original one was two hours late and I had to change airports in London so I wanted more than a couple hours to do that. Managed to do that all right and all flights were pretty uneventful. I was glad to be back but extremely tired.
I'm glad I went. It was a really good experience. Turns out I have a grade for the class even though I haven't done all of the assignments yet so I'm graduated. I've also been kindof depressed and feeling somewhat off, like something is different but I don't know what, or I want something to be different but its not, since I got back. I don't know. Probably due to not having much to do after having so much to do. Also, stressed about getting into grad school and finding a job and the fact that I think I should have things already. Having trouble finding motivation. I'll make myself though, getting started is the hardest part. I can't stand to sit around for too long doing nothing anyway and moping won't do much good. |

Yesterday we had a day off from school so I slpet in. Haven't done that in three weeks I think. After I got up my host mom took me out to eat at a greek resurant. I ordered capacci (I think that what its called). It was kindof bland so I didn't really like it but I wanted to try something new. After that we went to the Rhine Tower which has a revolving resurant and got dessert. It was nice. After that my host mom had some shooping to do and told me to go home or go shopping on my own. Since I didn't have a key, I wandered around for a couple hours. Found a cheap book to buy. One class today and then we have the rest of the day off to pack. We are going on a week long trip to southern Germany. I'm looking forward to it. No computer access for a week though. Nows your last chance to tell me if you want anything specific from Germany. |

Well, this week is going to be kind of blah until Friday. Class, class and more class. Not that what we´re learning in class isn´t interesting but its class. Yesterday we talked about the Holocaust. Many sobering yet thought provoking discussions. Today we learned some more German and talked about intercultural communication. I was surprised I had been the only one who had learned about intercultural communication before. I guess my inane medical communications course did come in handy in some way. For German we learned the articles and what the questions words are.
Yesterday, after class, we ended up going to a soccer game. It was neat. It kindof reminded me of an A&M football game in that we were standing the whole time and there was much loudness and yelling. I´m not really a fan of soccer, well any sport, but it was fun to be around people enjoying themselves. |

So on Thursday we took a bus ride to Brugge, Belgium. Its a nice little touristy town that has kept a midevil appeance. The only thing we had to do that say was take a city tour. It was interesting to learn about the history of the town. The rest of the day we got to ourselves and we spent most of that time shopping at all the souviner shops in town. The town is known for chocolate and lace so there was much of that to see. It was fun and we got some pictures that could be used as blackmail later later on. Dinner was fun and there was much laughing, mostly just at our table though. Never knew that one of our proffesors was like that. They didn´t even have that much to drink. We deamed the other table the boring adult table. More blackmail was gotten. Nothing comprimising of me yet though, of course I don´t think I´ve done anything compromising. Although one of the other people in the group finds it very amusing that I called myself a optimistic pessimist.
Friday we headed to Brussels. In the morning we listened to EU people talk about the EU. It was interesting but I could not keep my attention the whole time. One the the professors called on me to answer a question, I said I didn´t know and leter he told me he didn´t mean to put me on the spot, he just wanted any answer but I couldn´t help but think that I think I don´t know is a legitamate answer, I mean it was the truth. After that we ate lunch in the EU cafateria which wasn´t that bad for a cafateria. After that we went on a guided city tour. A couple others and I left early to catch a flight to Rome. We managed to find our way to the hotel with out too much trouble. Although some drunk guy threw a glass bottle at our bus which made everyone jump. The main train station in Rome is a pretty shadey place and not just because of that. One the bus I sat next to a guy from Italy that works for BP and does some work in Texas. One of those small world moments. Anyway, the hotel we got in Rome was much nicer than the one we got in Paris.
Saturday we spent the day sightseeing. We saw most everything except the Vatican. Said I remember seeing this in architectual history, many times. I especially liked the Trevi fountian and wondering around the ancient ruins. The ruins are one of the few quiet places in Rome. The colusseum is one the the most touristy place in Rome. They have people outside dressed like ancient Romans, which you could take your picture with for 10€. It would have been fun but not for much money. Of course there are the hundreds of suvenier shops. There are also lots of stray cats there. Oh yeah, and gelato from Italy is really good.
Saturday we went to the Vatican. Yay, seeing more famous art work. I though Creation by Michelangelo was bigger though. We were kindof dissappointed we didn´t see the Pope, however we didn´t really expect too. We went over to St. Peters Basillica but didn´t go inside becuase the line was long and we were getting low on money. We considered saying we were on a pilgramage to get in for free but decided that was bad. After that we spent hours just wondering through the city. We finally had to sit down and have lunch\dinner. Real Italian food is good. During dinner we were entertained by finger dancing guy, who we could see from where we were eating. The resurant we were at was in one of the many plazas and this one attrached alot of street performers. Couldn´t see all of finger dancing guys routine because he attrached a pretty large crowd which blocked our view. Did some souviner shopping and then went back to the hotel. It was a long tiring day with all that walking.
Today we got up early to catch our flight back. We made it after some confusion on where the bus stop was. Now just relaxing. Sightseeing is very tiring. |

So today we went to a hospital in Bonn and watched open heart surgery. The one I watched was a mitral valve repair. We only saw the end of it but it was still interesting. After that we went to look at the ICU where we mostly just listened to one of the doctors talk about how politics were affecting hospitals in Germany. Interesting but I think he could have said it in a lot less time.
My host mom keeps asking me for help with her english. I think I may just be confusing her. I´m not that good at explaining things and I´m not the best at english either. Oh well, I will try not to confuse her too much.
I saw an ad for a german movie spoofing star trek and other sci fi movies. I wanted to see it but I think not understanding German will lessen the humor value and I don´t think anyone in the group here will go cause none of them like sci fi.
Still not used to eating french fries with a fork and only having curry ketchup or mayonaise to put on them. |

We got to go to a German veterinary school today. It was worth the four hours to get to Hannover. First they showed us there agriculteral animals. It was interesting to hear about the animal rights activists in Germany. They are a pretty powerful group and it looks like they may make it so that people won´t be able to keep chickens. They´re a bit too extreme I think. We also got to see a cow start calving, an ultrasound of a cows liver and kidney and a kidney biopsy. Then we looked at there history of vetereinary medicine museum. Apperently there aren´t very many and they have the only history of military veterinary medicine. After that we went to the small animal clinic, but we didn´t get to spend much time there becuase we were running out of time. Vet school in Germany is pretty different. Its five and a half years but there is no undergrad work before hand. After the five years you are a veterinarian who can practice but your not called a doctor. To be a doctor you have to stay another 1-3 years and write a thesis. They take more students too. I think I´ll stick to vet school in America though.
On a side note, accidents on the autobahn are unerving to see, well most accidents are but this was an example of what really high speeds can do. Didn´t see it happen but I didn´t know a truck could twist like that. I hope everyone was alright |

This weekend was fun but exhausting. On Friday we went to the Cologne Zoo. We got a guided tour of the zoo from the zoo´s veterinarian. We got to go inside one of their new exhibits before it opened. They´re building a huge elephant exhibit and since the elephants aren´t there yet we walked around on the inside. We got to feel what it was like to be an animal on display. I was disappointed by the bird exhibit, mostly by the the fact that there aren´t very many. Well at the start of the tour the vet said they focus on primates and haven´t done very much with birds. Oh well. What little they did have I almost got left behind while I was looking. After the zoo, we went to a cafe on the Rhine and had a big bowl of fries and drinks on A&M. Then we went down to the Rhine´s shore and skiped stones for awhile and then headed back to Dusseldorf.
Got up at 4am to catch our flight to Paris on Friday morning. After we arrived and figured out what train to take, we went to Notre Dame. We ended up walking alot while in Paris because we either couldn´t figure out the buses or the buses took to long. I didn´t have the best of experiences at Notre Dame. There were pushy beggers. I have no problems giving to the needy and will gladly do so but I don´t think they should grab things out of your hands. I can understand being desperate but I guess it irked me becuase they would have gotten the money had the chance been given. Also, inside it was too touristy. There were signs almost eveywhere you looked for something to buy. It took away from the atmosphere. Beautiful architecture marred by a sign saying 2€ for an offering candle. I was also tired and cranky at the time so I probably misconcieved alot and was looking for the bad. Then we ate lunch at a freanch cafe. After that we headed to the eiffel tower. Liked the view, hated the overcrowding. After that we went to check in to our hotel. We got what we payed for but it was a place to sleep other than the street. We crashed pretty early becuase we had done alot of walking and it had been hot. On Saturday we went to the Arc d´Triumphe, I know I can´t spell. We got there before the crowds so that was nice. Then to the Louvre, the best part of the trip. I would like to see all of it one day. Then we went shopping on the Champ d´Elyees. Nice shops but didn´t find anything. Actually I did find a bird shirt but it was 129€, and thats just to much. It was another day with alot of walking and we had to get up early again so we went to bed pretty early yet again. i think we got in everything that we could fit in two days with out wearing ourselves out too much. All in all I think I would have had a better experience had we not gone in the height of tourist season. But atleast now I can say I´ve been there.
When we got back to Dusseldorf we decided to check out the fish market. It was interesting. There was a live band and lots of fish. Had some fried fish which was good. The band sang cotton eyed joe and I wanted to see if anyone was dancing to it but couldn´t. I don´t think I even remember the dance to it. There´s also a fashion show going on today and my host mom is going to take me to that ot atleast part of it. oh yeah, I found 1L of coke for 1.75€. Its the cheapest coke I´ve seen since I got here. I was happy. |

Went to the Bayer factory today. They showed us around the their labs and talked about their machines and the prcedures they do. Only thing I didn't like to much was looking at the bacteria fermetners. Here is a fermenter and here is a bigger fermenter and here again is yet another bigger fermenter. The guy giving the tour gave interesting explianations but it was looking at the same thing over and over only bigger. After that we went to an historic town on the Rhine and had ice cream. It was nice except for the yellow jackets. I like looking at historic buildings especially when they are by a nature preserve. |

Today was pretty boring. Lots of class again. Learned alittle bit more German then we learned some about the German culture. We talked about how WWII impacted German culture. We talked about how the past three generations have felt guilty and how the younger generation is starting not to feel that so much. Talked about how some parents will not be authoritative to their kids at all because they see that as bad. We also talked about how there is no national pride in Germany as a result also. Later went to a class at the University of Dusseldorf and learned about medical ethics. I tied no to fall alseep. It wasn't that bad just too broad. |

Today started off kind of bad. We were supposed to give presentations on a certain countries health care system. I prepared my report and had it all thought out but when I got up there words failed me and it was bad. It looked like I hadn´t prepared the thing at all. I even knew everyone and don´t feel nervous about them under normal circumstances. I wouldn´t mind so much except the professors being able to public speak is something that a veterinarian should be good at. Not to mention that one of the other students got a picture of me looking really bored while one the professors was talking. I actually don´t think I was bored but yeah, did I mention one of the professors is on the veterinary school selections commitee and I wanted to ask the other for a recommendation letter. Was not feeling too good about myself or my chances after this morning. Not that big of deal but I get discouraged easily.
Things got better though. Got to talk to people I hadn´t gotten to talk to in awhile and that made me happy. Also, got plans for travel to Paris and Rome in the next weekends finalized which I´m looking forward too. My host mom got me a present, some bird postcards. She is so nice. So, now I feeling more hopeful and ready to do better. |

This weekends been kindof laid back. Saturday I met some friends to go eat lunch. We went to a Japanese cafe and it didn´t have any Japanese food that I´d ever seen before. I think they came up with there own dishes but it was still good. After that we did some shopping. Still haven´t really bought anything since I came here. I´ve only bought food and postcards. After that I went home and my host mom took me the fair. Got to ride a couple more rides. Rode my first inverted roller coaster. I´m slowly working on riding bigger and bigger roller coasters. A few years ago I wouldn´t go near one. Another thing about the fair, the only music I heard there was American music. In fact I haven´t German music since I got here. I was kind of hoping to hear somthing different.
Today I went to the flea market. I´ve never been to a flea market before but this one reminded me of a garage sale. A bunch of people selling stuff they but didn´t want anymore. Saw lots of guady bird stuff but didn´t buy anything. Also did a little bit of walking along th Rhine. That was nice. It feels like its a December in Texas here. I´ve been told this isn´t normal and its usually hotter. |

So yesterday was the tour of Cologne in the afternoon. The morning was more German lessons. Now I can count to 100 in german. 55 is fun to say in german. Anyway, most of what we did in Cologne was tour the cathedral. I never knew the bones of the three wise men were keep there. Its beautiful. I really like gothic architecture. As my professor said, even if you aren´t christian, you feel something when go in that cathedral.
Today was a trip to Bonn. We went to an experimental farm run by Bonn University where they are cross breeding pigs and doing embryo transfers in cows. Of course this brought up the issue of cloning at least as far as animals are concerned. We all pretty much agreed people should not clone their pets becuase the clone isn´t going to be exactly like the original and the average person may not understand that. After that farm we went to a zooilogical museum. It was filled with taxidermy animals. It was interesting but I was unhappy when I heard they shot animals specifically for their main exihbit. They had some live animals too. Mostly snakes and lizards.
After that we went back to Dusseldorf. Got to see a firworks show. Dusseldorf has the largest fair in Germany and its nearing its end so they had a fireworks show. It was 25 minutes long and ver pretty. Didn´t have one of my favorite fireworks but I still enjoyed the show. |
